We went into the city and saw the new China exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum.
Gotta say- in the absence of a long history of modern photography and video, there was a remarkable similarity throughout the show. Some really stellar pieces, and some kind of ok ones too. There is one guy who appears to be mostly an exhibitionist who likes to wear women's makeup and hair. That has to go over well with the powers that be...
Overall, one of the main underlying feelings I took home was that these people have to be incredibly committed to their expression. In a place where the photos they took have such strong political resonance, it's impressive that they created the images in the show.
On another note- it was the first time we'd gone through the musee in its entirety. I was blown away by the installation piece on the third floor. The one where they took all the stuff from the permanent collection and turned it into some kind of wacked granny's attic display. Fucking amazing. I want all of it in my living room. There's a gallery in Ballard that has a similar effect going on. I was mystified trying to figure out what was for sale in the place. Cool to the nth degree. Someday when we have all of our possessions in one state, we can try to do some cool stuff like that with it all.
